The technical name of the process of ending a marriage is "dissolution," although it is most commonly referred to as divorce. This process encompasses a wide variety of legal documents, hearings, and orders, including: legal separation; temporary orders for spousal maintenance (alimony), child support, child custody (both legal custody and physical custody), and visitation rights; provisions for each spouse to discover all property owned by and/or possessed by the other, as well as jointly-owned marital estate property; temporary hearings and judgments/orders; final adjudicatory hearings; the court's final judgment (decree); and post-judgment motions and relief. The spouse who initiates a divorce action is called the "plaintiff;" the other spouse is called the "defendant".
