Property Division

In Michigan, all property that a married couple jointly accumulates during their marriage is considered to part of the "marital estate," which must be equally divided if the marriage dissolves. The marital estate includes:

  • Real estate
  • Personal property (furniture, appliances, cars, etc.)
  • Business property and interests
  • Pension plans
  • Retirement accounts

It is therefore vital to distinguish between marital estate property and pre-owned or pre-marital property, as well as property that either spouse inherits individually during the course of the marriage.
